The Ambulance You Helped Provide Saved a Life

Recently, our Country Director, Tezita Negussie, shared a story that reminds us what your generosity makes possible.

An 18-year-old pregnant woman arrived at Serving Sante in Limbé in critical condition. She has sickle cell disease and had dangerously low hemoglobin levels. She urgently needed a blood transfusion, but the blood supply at Serving Sante was limited.

The team acted immediately.

Clinicians accompanied her in the ambulance to the hospital in Milot, providing care throughout the journey. When her condition worsened along the way, they resuscitated her while calling ahead so the receiving team would be ready the moment she arrived.

She survived.

Because she comes from a family with very limited means, Serving Sante provided every aspect of her care at no cost.

Afterward, Dr. Nelly Osias, the medical director, shared this message with us:

“Thank you for your effort and support. They are not in vain. MSPP [Ministry of Health] has to say thank you because you are catching maternal deaths for them like goals in a World Cup football.”

We smiled at the analogy, but we also understood what she meant. Every maternal death prevented represents a family kept whole and a future made possible.

This story is also a reminder that lives are rarely saved by a single intervention. They are saved because an entire health system is ready to respond.

Your support helped make the ambulance available. It helps train and equip healthcare workers. It strengthens partnerships between hospitals so patients can be transferred quickly. And it helps ensure that families can still receive lifesaving care even if they can’t afford it.
