We have canceled this year’s Maine Walks with Haiti 5K fundraiser, which had been scheduled for June 27 in Portland, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and replaced it with a virtual fundraiser, We Walk with Haiti, which launches TODAY and will run through June 30.
Maine Walks with Haiti is our largest annual fundraiser, and proceeds raised from the event make up a significant portion of our annual operating budget. By making We Walk with Haiti a month-long virtual event, we are endeavoring to raise funds that will enable us to continue our work while providing a fun and engaging event for our supporters worldwide.
The coronavirus pandemic has made our support in Haiti all the more important—and time-sensitive. The global health crisis has disrupted supply chains in Haiti and contributed to the extreme poverty and lack of resources that makes delivering health care in the country difficult even under normal circumstances.
Konbit Sante is working with the Haiti Ministry of Health and other non-government organizations (NGOs) to provide its healthcare partners in North Haiti with the resources and training necessary to provide their communities with coronavirus awareness and treatment while also continuing to provide normal medical care. We Walk with Haiti is a vital component in our fundraising efforts to make this all happen.
