As many of you know, a 7.2 magnitude Earthquake hit Haiti on August 14, 2021. It caused significant damage in the southern parts of Haiti and beyond. As a result, landslides engulfed farms and destroyed properties. Dr. Mesadieu, Executive Director of Unite de Lutte pour la Sante (ULS) Health Center, and one of Konbit Sante’s key partners understood that his team needed to be mobilized to care for the injured victims. Those affected needed medical help due to their severe injuries.
Dr. Mesadieu quickly engaged his team of doctors, nurses, and drivers, and nearby healthcare partners to provide support. They also secured an ambulance to assist with transportation to the south. In the vehicle they managed to carry necessary medical materials and supplies. Along with support from the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the team embarked on their mission.
From August 24 to 29, ULS Health Center provided medical care and assistance to over 880 people in the affected communities of the south. They offered services such as general consultations, rapid laboratory tests, essential medications, and first aid and wound care treatment. They also completed several door-to-door home visits to treat wounds and prescribed antibiotics for infections. The ULS Health Center team also distributed food, water, and hygiene kits to help people get through the next few weeks and months.
With financial support provided by Konbit Sante and other supporters, they purchased medications and medical supplies for approximately $4,000 and food, water and hygiene supplies for about $3,000.
Dr. Mesadieu stated, “We were saddened to see and speak with the survivors of this tragedy who live in a very precarious situation. They mourn the death of their families, friends, and other Haitians in the community. Just knowing that they have neither water to drink nor food was heartbreaking. Many people lost all they had. The ULS Health Center team was glad to provide some support and relief to those who were affected.”
Konbit Sante is always ready to support partners like the ULS Health Center as they continue to care for their communities and beyond. According to Rupal Ramesh Shah, Executive Director of Konbit Sante, “This was a collaborative effort and we are thankful we could support Dr. Mesadieu and his team at the ULS Health Center. Their team earnestly provided support for several days in the south. In the days to come, we’ll continue to provide financial support, as needed, to support the earthquake relief efforts.”
