How Care Continues When the Power Goes Out

March 12, 2026

Reliable electricity is one of the most important—and least visible—parts of safe medical care.

In northern Haiti, where the national grid has  been offline for years, hospitals and clinics rely on generators, solar systems, and hybrid infrastructure to keep lifesaving services running. When power fails, everything from oxygen concentrators to operating room lights are at risk.

This month, as part of our spring campaign focused on infrastructure and reliable power, we invite you to learn more about the systems that help keep care going.

When the Grid Fails: The Importance of Infrastructure in Providing Healthcare  in Northern Haiti
Thursday, March 26 | 12:00 PM EDT

This conversation will explore how thoughtful infrastructure—especially solar energy systems—helps protect patient care in a place where electricity cannot be taken for granted.

Presenters

Dr. Nelly Osias
Dr. Osias is the medical director of Serving Sante Hospital and a dedicated OBGYN working to strengthen healthcare delivery in northern Haiti. She will share firsthand perspectives on how reliable electricity and strong infrastructure directly impact patient care and the daily work of clinicians.

Hugh Tozer
A longtime Konbit Sante volunteer and engineer, Hugh has helped design and implement many of the electrical and water infrastructure improvements that support our partner facilities. His work has focused on practical solutions that allow hospitals to continue operating despite unreliable power and fuel shortages.

Nick Stolberg
Nick has lived in Cap-Haitien since 2010 and is a leader in Haiti’s renewable energy sector. As founder of Brighter Haiti, he designs, builds, and maintains high-voltage industrial solar energy systems. Nick’s team works across sectors—including healthcare—to create reliable and sustainable power solutions.

Through partnerships with international suppliers and his local technical team, he has helped expand renewable energy capacity across the region.

Together, Hugh, Nick, and Dr. Osias will discuss:

  • Why reliable electricity is essential for safe patient care
  • The role solar power can play in hospitals and clinics
  • The challenges and opportunities of building energy systems in Haiti
  • How Konbit Sante is working with partners to strengthen infrastructure across northern Haiti

Whether you are a longtime supporter or just learning about our work, this conversation offers a window into the behind-the-scenes systems that make healthcare possible.

Reserve Your Spot

As part of our spring campaign, we are working throughout the month of March to raise funds that support these critical infrastructure improvements. Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue sharing updates from our partners and highlighting the systems that help keep care uninterrupted.

Thank you for standing with the clinicians and communities of northern Haiti!
