University of New England Students Create and Donate Safe Birthing Kits

Because many women in Haiti cannot afford to pay for delivery at a hospital or clinic, Konbit Sante provides expectant mothers and midwives with important, basic tools for having safe births for themselves and their babies at home.

What’s in the bag?

• A small bar of soap
• A piece of clean plastic sheeting 4′ wide x 5′ long
• A piece of clean string 24″ long
• A packet of alcohol wipes
• A pair of sterile exam gloves
• A packet or travel container of hand sanitizer
• A box of Maxi pads
• A newborn cap
• Other infant clothing
• Last but not least, a small infant-safe stuffed toy

The University of New England students who created and donated these kits are part of an interprofessional class that educates future healthcare professionals about the science and social impacts of reproductive healthcare.
