• Justinien University Hospital

  • The largest public hospital in northern Haiti and the second-largest teaching hospital in the country, Justinien University Hospital (JUH) became Konbit Sante’s first partner in 2001. Named after Justinien Etienne, a local magistrate who spearheaded and oversaw its construction, the facility opened as a hospice in 1890 and was converted into a hospital in 1920. It serves a population of over 1 million residents of Cap-Haitien and nearby areas.
The campus includes about 300 in-patient beds, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and radiology services. Medical residents and interns train in multiple disciplines, including internal medicine, general surgery, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, and anesthesiology.
JUH operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), and Konbit Sante works with the MSPP to strengthen capacity for health care at the hospital. Our office in Cap-Haitien is located on the JUH campus, and includes a conference room for meetings and training sessions. We support the salaries of MSPP employees who are embedded within the hospital.
A pediatric building funded by USAID with support from Konbit Sante opened in 2018, and includes separate wards for neonates, infants, and young children and adolescents, as well as two isolation rooms for the treatment of patients with highly contagious diseases, exam rooms, and a triage area. We also provide support to other services—such as the emergency department and critical care—in various capacities, from providing materials and equipment to collaborating on training sessions.
