Maine Music Outreach

Maine Music Outreach (MMO) empowers high school musicians to make a difference in the lives of others. Selected sophomores and juniors travel to Haiti to work, teach and play their instruments alongside young Haitian musicians using music as a universal language.

Through the universal language of music, MMO connects high school musicians from Maine with music students attending summer camp in Haiti. During the school year, students here in Maine prepare to teach and play with young Haitian musicians. They learn Haitian folk music, the national anthem and scales in Creole. The music director provides guidance in music theory and teaching techniques. MMO participants learn about the culture through art, film and literature, including the reading of Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. All this preparation culminates in a 10-day trip to Haiti. Students attend the Ecole de Musique Sainte Trinite in Cange, Haiti. Maine students offer music instruction to the youngest camp participants, but also play alongside their peers in the Concert Band. This is an incredible experience for the students selected as participants of MMO – they learn they really can have an impact on the lives of others. MMO wants to join other non-profit organizations working in Haiti, and is therefore excited to support Konbit Sante's work in Cap-Haitien. The MMO band will open Maine Walks With Haiti events with both the U.S. and Haitian national anthems. Band members will then change instruments and our impromptu "Ra-Ra" band will cheer on walkers and runners as they make their way around Back Cove on Saturday, May 13. Please join MMO in support of Konbit Sante!
