It has been more than 15 years since we started our remarkable journey together with our friends and colleagues in Cap Haitien. Thank you to the many of you who been a part of it since the beginning, as well as those who have joined the “konbit” along the way, and a special welcome to those who are new to the work. We are ever aware that none of the progress made to date would have been possible, without the faithful and generous backing of supporters like yourselves.
This year the Walk/Run is happening on Mother’s Day weekend in the U.S.; while we celebrate the mothers in our lives, we realize that there are great inequalities in our world in terms of care for women and their children, with the materially poorest most often having the worst options. We have been privileged to witness first-hand significant improvements in the health system for the people in northern Haiti, with local people taking more of a role in our work and direction. This year we will soon see the opening of a new pediatric facility at the Justinian Hospital. This will be a major upgrade from the old facility, but in order to be successful, work is underway to carefully plan for how the space and the care will be managed there. Many changes have already been instituted. For example, every single birth is now not only attended by a OB/GYN resident, but also by a pediatric resident so that both the mother and the child have someone focusing specifically on their care needs. This is part of a bigger strategy to continue to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
There is still much to be done; we are moved by the degree and depth of the need and suffering we see endured by our neighbors just a few hundred miles from US shores, and we are inspired by the motivation and determination of our Haitian friends/colleagues to want to continue this partnership. We invite you to also continue to be a part of this endeavor- this "konbit". We are deeply grateful for your financial support which helps make all this possible. Thank you.
