Improvements in Diabetes Care

Nijnie Jasmin, RN, treats a diabetic patient at Justinian Hospital.Konbit Sante’s mission is to strengthen the health system in northern Haiti to improve the health of the population. How do we strengthen the system? Simply, it means that we support the most basic building blocks of health care - people, materials, physical infrastructure, information systems, and services – to ensure that the residents of Cap-Haitien have the best quality health care possible.

One of our most important investments has been in the people who promote, provide, or manage health care in Cap-Haitien. These people include community health workers, nurses, doctors, and administrators. For example, Konbit Sante volunteer Dr. John Devlin has worked at Justinian University Hospital to improve the care that diabetic patients receive. He and his Haitian partners have trained internal medicine residents (physicians in training) on tools that improve the treatment and management of patients with diabetes. Our research has shown that the residents are using the tools they have been taught and consequently the patients are receiving better care.
